How to run an adult sports league without living in spreadsheets
If you organize adult rec—softball, volleyball, basketball, soccer, flag—you’ve probably rebuilt the same season in Google Sheets, a GroupMe, and a Venmo memo field. It works until it doesn’t: a rainout week, a disputed score, a manager who never paid, a free agent who never got the address.
What actually breaks
- Rosters drift. The sheet is “source of truth” until three people edit different copies.
- Schedules don’t travel. Players live on their phones; your PDF lives in email.
- Money is tribal knowledge. Venmo doesn’t give the league a clean payout history.
- Communication has no context. Texts aren’t tied to teams, weeks, or RSVPs.
A better season checklist
- Create the league once (sport, dates, registration rules, playoff format).
- Invite managers with a code, link, or QR—not a forwardable screenshot.
- Collect registration in Rek and pay out to the organizer bank—or run ops-only if your org isn’t ready yet.
- Generate and publish the schedule; handle postponements without rebuilding the sheet.
- Use RSVPs and chat so “who’s in Thursday?” isn’t a 40-message thread.
- Enter scores, keep standings live, run brackets when the regular season ends.
- Start next season from the last one and re-invite returning teams.
Registration & payouts
Adult leagues need money that works: per-team or per-player fees in Rek, with payouts to your bank and a real trail. That’s the default path. If your org can’t collect in-app yet, you can still run rosters, schedule, RSVPs, and chat—then turn fees on when you’re ready. Don’t rebuild Venmo chase-downs between seasons if you don’t have to.
Invites, links & QR
Share a manager invite, player invite, or free-agent invite as a code, deep link, or QR. New people join in the app without you maintaining a spreadsheet of emails. Re-send the same invite when someone drops the thread—don’t rebuild the list.
Schedule & weekly RSVPs
Generate the season once, publish weeks, and postpone rainouts without rewriting every cell. Managers and players RSVP for the week’s games so you’re not chasing “who’s in?” on game day. Scores feed standings instead of a separate tab nobody opens.
Playoffs without a bracket spreadsheet
When the regular season ends, run single- or double-elim brackets in Rek and export a PDF if you need a printout for the gym desk. Seeds follow standings; you don’t paste teams into a template every Monday.
Your org hub on the web
Every organizer gets a public page (rekapp.net/org/…) that lists your leagues in one place. List in Rek’s directory so new teams and free agents can find you—not only through Facebook posts.
